Newington Armoury Heritage Railway

Today we depart the Central Coast and travel to Homebush in Sydney to the Newington Armory Heritage Railway. En-route we will enjoy morning tea at Bicentenial Park.

Newington Armory Heritage Railway is a hidden gem for railway enthusiasts.

This tour offers you the opportunity to ride the Heritage Train for an exciting trip around the historic buildings and experience how the munitions were moved around the Newington Arms Depot by the heritage listed narrow gauge railway.

Ordnance wagons have been converted into passenger carriages with seats, roofs and doors for your trip around the Armory. The tour starts near the former gateway to the complex, travelling past what are now the artists studios and the Birds Australia Discovery Centre. The train then enters an area restricted to the public, stopping at several points to view the building used to store materials, and also covers the Royal Australian Navy section.

The highlight of the tour is when the train travels through the centre of one of the buildings and an array of bombs, shells, missiles and military shields are briefly glimpsed. The train stops allowing passengers to inspect the display.

What is emphasised in this tour is that these are real weapons made safe by removing the explosives.
